IVT Browser Notes:
The IVT uses features built into your web browser, and browser developers sometimes disable features. Often they do this to address security problems unrelated to the IVT.
Currently, the IVT is running on most major browsers without problems. You may, however, have limited functionality or no functionality if your browser is set to block pop-up windows. If you are having trouble, check your browser setting for pop-ups (generally in "preferences").
The IVT includes one feature that allows references to specific parts of an archive to be included on web pages: clicking on the reference will open the IVT to that exact point in one of the archived videos. Another feature allows a set of references to be embeded in a web page as a Play List. Clicking on a Play List button opens the IVT and a small window that makes all the included references available as a hot list.
Sometimes it is desirable to have the IVT located on a different server than the web pages with the references (in fact, for us, this is the norm). In that case, the IVT uses cross-domain messaging to allow the web page and the IVT to communicate. While most browsers support this feature, Internet Explorer currently does not, even though Microsoft provides clear documentation of the function. If your web browser does not support this feature, you will receive an error message. You can still enter the relevant reference in the IVT manually. We hope Internet Explorer will join the party soon!
If you would like to build your own IVT implementation, you can click here to download the software and instructions you will need to get started. The software, developed by UBC professor Linc Kesler, is available free of charge under the GNU open software license.
